Tax Implications
All contributions to the HASF are considered gifts to the Northern Illinois University Foundation and are credited at full value for purposes of the member's University gift record.
However, a contribution to the HASF which entitles the donor to priority assignment of football or men's basketball season tickets is 80 percent deductible for income tax purposes, according to Internal Revenue Code, Section 170 (m). In addition, the Internal Revenue Service has ruled that this 80 percent portion of your gift is only tax deductible to the extent that it exceeds the value of the benefits you receive. The athletic development office has estimated the fair market value of the benefits described in this brochure and this information is available upon request.

Methods of Giving
Cash and checks are the most common types of donation. Please make your checks payable to NIU Foundation.
The Huskie Athletic Scholarship Fund accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express cards for pledge payments.
For your convenience the HASF offers online giving. Make A Gift
Over 600 companies in the United States offer a matching gift program. At no additional expense to you, your company can double your gift to the HASF. Contact your employer's human resources office to see if you can increase your gift to the HASF.
A named endowment may be established in honor or in memory of an individual, family or organization to provide a perpetual gift for NIU Athletics. A minimum gift of $25,000 is required to form an endowment. Gifts to the endowment fund are invested and a portion of the return is used to fund scholarships each year. This is a great way to provide continuing support for Huskie Athletics, as the principle of the gift is never spent.
Planned and deferred gifts are an increasingly popular way to donate to Huskie Athletics as they allow more flexibility with your gift. Insurance policies, real estate, annuities, wills, and trust are only a few ways to leave a legacy to NIU.
Rather than a monetary gift, the HASF can accept goods and services that would save our athletic budget expenditures. All Gifts-In-Kind must be approved by the HASF.
Appreciated stocks are great options, as the donor may avoid partial capital gains taxes and still receive a charitable income tax donation.
