March 1, 2008 YPSILANTI, Mich. - Northern Illinois track and field had three athletes score and two others set personal records on the final day of competition at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, Saturday. As a team, Northern Illinois placed 12th with 12.5 points. Akron won the women's indoor championship with 106 points. "I'm a bit disapointed with our finish, but I believe the girls effort is tremendous," NIU head coach Connie Teaberry said. "Our places didn't represent the work and the dedication the athletes put into this year." Seniors highlighted the day for Northern Illinois, scoring 5.5 of the teams 7.5 points. Seniors Elizabeth Berquist (Toddville, Iowa/Alburnett), and Meagan Guenther (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) both tallied points for NIU. Senior Stacey Rosch netted a career-best time in the 3,000-meter run and fellow senior Coretta Evans notched a season-best time in the 400-meter dash. Guenther placed eighth in the shot put, scoring a point for the Huskies with a throw of 44'06.25". Guenther also scored Friday, when she placed sixth in the weight throw. Berquist's leap of 5'06.00" landed her in a three-way tie for third place in the high jump, netting 4.5 team points. Triple-jumper Shoshanna Brown (Plainfield, Ill./Romeoville) scored the rest of the Huskies' day two points with a seventh-place finish in the triple jump. Brown boounded a career indoor-best 37'08.75" to capture two points. Evans recorded her best time of the year in the 400-meter dash, running a 58.78, but finishing ninth, just out of scoring position. Distance runners Sunsea Shaw (South Bend, Ind./Riley) and Rosch had career days. Shaw's 5:17.33 time in the mile was the best the freshman's short tenure at NIU. Rosch punctuated her indoor career with a personal record time of 10:34.26 in the 3,000-meter run.
The Huskies open the outdoor season in just one week, when they head to Orlando to compete in Disney's Relays, March 7-8. |
