Rockford, IL --- Despite claiming the doubles point, the Northern Illinois University women's tennis team wasn't able to keep Drake University from scoring a 6-1 victory in Saturday's (Feb. 18) home match played here at the Clock Tower Inn Tennis Center. The Huskies got off to a postive start with a 1-0 lead, but then Drake's Bulldogs used an NIU forfeit at the No. 6 position coupled with a sweep of five contested matches for the 6-1 triumph. The win enabled DU to improve to 2-4 while Northern Illinois saw its record dip to 1-5. "We played very well in doubles, certainly our best effort thus far. But even though we fought well in singles, Drake was just too good a team," NIU coach Pontus Hiort admitted. "In many respects, those singles matches were closer than the scores indicate. A point here or there turns a game in our favor. Turn a few games around and the outcome might have flipped our way. But the bottom line is that Drake got the bigger points when a game or set was on the line. Of all the things we did right, we just didn't do them right at the most critical times." The Huskies started off alright as newcomer Nao Uememura (Kasugai-schi Aehi, Japan / Kardina International) and Lilian Asuaje (Monterrey, Mexico / American School Foundation of Monterrey) combined for an 8-4 victory in the No. 1 doubles slot. Jenny Edner (Stocksund, Sweden / Kramforsgymnasiet) teamed with Megan Books (Aurora / West) for an 8-5 win in the No. 2 position to give NIU the doubles point despite having to forfeit the No. 3 match.
Two of the singles setbacks were hard-fought three-set battles as Drake No. 1 Veronika Leszayova pulled off a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win ove Edner at No. 1 singles while the Bulldogs' Eve Rusdianto managed a 7-6, 6-7, 1-0 super tiebreaker win over Asuaje at No. 3 singles.
Northern Illinois has a particularly busy weekend ahead as the Huskies journey to Cedar Falls, IA, for a quadrangular hosted by the University of Northern Iowa. NIU faces Chicago State Unversity in an 11 a.m. match on Saturday (Feb. 25) followed by a Sunday (Feb. 26) doubleheader. The Huskies face the host UNI Panthers at 11 a.m. and then meet South Dakota State University at 3 p.m. WOMEN'S TENNIS---Drake University vs. Northern Illinois University / at Rockford, IL / Clock Tower Inn Tennis Center / Non-Conference Dual / Saturday / Feb. 18, 2006 DRAKE 6, NORTHERN ILLINOIS 1 (at Rockford, IL / Clock Tower Inn Tennis Center) Doubles: No. 1---Nao Uememura / Lilian Asuaje (NIU) def.
