  Andy Morreale

Andy Morreale

Player Profile

Position:
Assistant Coach

Experience:
Fifth Season

Andy Morreale enters his fifth season as an assistant coach with the NIU women's gymnastics program, but his association with Northern Illinois gymnastics dates back to his days as a Huskie student-athlete and includes a stint as an assistant coach with the NIU men's program in 1985-86.

Morreale works with many aspects of the Huskie program, with particular emphasis on the vault.

Morreale's involvement with gymnastics goes beyond his Northern Illinois connections as for the past 22 years, the Addison, Illinois native has been the owner, director and coach of Energym Gymnastics (formerly Gym-Kats) in nearby Sycamore.

As a coach at the club level, Morreale has produced multiple state and regional champions, and saw Amy Bohn qualify for the Junior Olympic National team. In addition, many of his gymnasts have won individual medals at Junior National and Elite National competitions. Numerous Energym gymnasts have competed at the collegiate level, including current Huskies Meghan Cronin, Ashley Hurley and Lindsey Murphy.

Morreale was named the U.S.G.A. Region 5 Coach of the Year in 1985 and is a member of the Elite Coaches' Association and a U.S.A. Gymnastics Professional member.

Morreale's involvement with the NIU women's program marks his second tenure as a coach at Northern Illinois. A former team captain of the Huskie men's squad, he joined his former coach Chuck Ehrlich's staff for two seasons from 1985-86.

A standout all-around gymnast for the Huskies from 1980-85 after graduating from Addison Trail High School, Morreale's NIU teams twice placed in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships, highlighted by a sixth-place showing at the 1982 event. The following year, the Huskies were once again among the country's elite with an eighth-place team performance.

Outside of his collegiate competitions, Morreale took 13th at the United States Gymnastics Federation's 1983 Midwest Regional and competed at the U.S. Championships from 1982-85. While at Addison Trail, his prep squad won three state championships in men's gymnastics.

Morreale graduated from Northern Illinois in 1985 with a bachelor's degree in finance. He is married to the former Kim Seelenbinder of Elk Grove and the couple has three children, Andrew (15), Jessica (13) and Allison (9). His younger brother, Sam, is also a member of the Huskie coaching staff.
