Dec. 7, 2006 DeKalb, Ill. - The NIU Golf Program is continuing the four year partnership established with DeKalb School District 428, specifically Brooks and Jefferson Elementary Schools. Last year saw the program reach over 400 children and bring golf into their lives through the Physical Education Curriculum at their respective schools. This year, the Huskies and the Kids Golf Foundation of Illinois hope to touch even more children from Kindergarten to 5th grade, through golf. NIU Golfers serve as mentors with a student/mentor ratio ranging from 4::1 to 1::1 during the culminating "golf course" activity. NIU Coaches provide instruction and supervise the daily activities along with Physical Education teachers, Barb Beck (Brooks) in November and Linda Divine (Jefferson) in February. In early November, NIU Women's golf team members and staff provided six days of hands on golf instruction to 176 Brooks Elementary School students in Ms. Beck's classes. They learned all aspects of the game including modified playing situations and lifeskills. Anyone with questions regarding this program can contact NIU Head Women's Golf Coach, Pam Tyska at 815-753-1548 or ptyska@niu.edu for more information. --NIU--
