Northern Illinois 4, Chicago State 0 in PDF Format

Rockford, Ill. - The Northern Illinois men's tennis team built some momentum heading into the Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinals, as the host Huskies earned the 4-0 whitewash over Chicago State in the opening round at the Clock Tower Racquet Club on Thursday afternoon.

"We started a little slow in doubles and still got the doubles point, NIU head men's tennis coach Pontus Hiort said. "After that I felt like we came out in singles play very focused and energetic. We played with great intensity and enthusiasm and it's nice to pull out the win."

With the victory, NIU improves to 11-7 on the season, while the Cougars end their season with a mark of 4-12. The Huskies move on to the MAC Tournament semifinals against two-time defending champion, Western Michigan on Friday morning. First serve is set for 10 a.m.

NIU claimed the doubles point as the Huskies received victories from both their No. 2 and No. 3 squads. Huskie senior Alex Friesen (Vancouver, B.C./Burnaby Central) and junior Jimmy Chu (Lima, Peru) emerged victorious at No. 2 doubles with the 8-4 win over Cameron Shanklin and Jonathon Sutjiadi. NIU freshman Matt Hansen (Topeka, Kan./Miami Online (FL)) and senior Diego Zegarra-Ballon (Lima, Peru/Markham College Prep) earned the 8-2 win over Abram Mamahit and Toni Todoric at No. 3 doubles

In singles play, NIU junior Brian Livingston (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) earned a hard-fought 6-1, 7-6 win over Prakoso Imanuel at No. 1. Chu claimed the 6-1, 6-4 win over Todoric at No. 4 singles, while Hansen upended Mamahit, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.
