2006: Honorable Mention All-MAC selection. Started all 12 games played and missed one because of injury. Ranked second on team with 111 tackles, seven for loss, with one sack and one fumble recovery. Intercepted two passes to lead the team and had five pass break ups. Placed third in MAC and 20th nationally with 9.25 tackles per game. Had nine or more stops in eight games and totaled four double-digit tackle contests. Led team's linebacking corps in tackles for loss and ranked second on team in pass break ups. Recovered fumble and totaled nine tackles at Ohio State (9-2). Racked up 12 tackles, one for loss, vs. Ohio (9-9). Totaled 11 stops against Buffalo (9-16). Earned MAC West Defensive Player of the Week after registering 14 tackles, one for loss, and was unofficially credited with 22 stops according to coaches' film review at Ball State (9-30). Had a sack and a tackle for loss in five-tackle effort at Miami (10-8). Intercepted first career pass and returned it 44 yards and was credited with pass break up and seven tackles at Western Michigan (10-14). Credited with three pass break ups and five stops vs. Temple (10-21). Intercepted pass in nine-tackle performance at Iowa (10-28). 2005: First Team Scripps Freshman All-American by Football Writers Association of America. Honorable Mention Freshman All-American by The Sporting News. Played in 11 games and started final six contests. Ranked second on team with 101 tackles, 64 solo, and had three tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and one sack. Made collegiate debut and racked up 12 tackles in reserve role at Michigan (9-3). Credited with eight stops against Tennessee Tech (9-17). Registered seven tackles, including one for loss, against Miami (10-5). Earned first career start and totaled nine tackles and fumble recovery at Kent State (10-22). Amassed team-high 17 tackles with sack, forced fumble, and quarterback hurry vs. Ball State (10-29). Accumulated 13 tackles, including 10 solo, at Central Michigan (11-5). Posted 13-tackle effort with one pass deflection at Toledo (11-16). Had seven tackles, one for loss, with pass deflection against Western Michigan (11-25). Made eight stops vs. Akron in MAC Championship Game (12-1).

2004: Redshirted.

High School: Named team captain and MVP, team Defensive Player of the Year and Big Hit Award recipient, first team Milwaukee Journal Sentinel All-State, second team Associated Press All-State, first team All-Fox Valley Association, league Defensive Player of the Year and Linebacker of the Year, first team Appleton Post-Crescent All-Area, and honorable mention WFCA All-Region during senior season. Led team with 93 tackles and 10.5 tackles for loss as linebacker, rushed for 317 yards and three TDs on 59 carries as fullback and punted 51 times for 36.2 average on playoff qualifier as a senior. Totaled 1,002 career rushing yards and 241 tackles and played in Shrine Game at completion of prep career. Tabbed team captain and MVP, team Defensive Player of the Year and Big Hit Award recipient, and first team All-FVC as a junior. Earned four letters in football and four in wrestling. Four-season team MVP, league, Regional, and Sectional wrestling champion. Three-time all-state wrestling selection and state finalist as wrestler. Advanced to state finals with unbeaten record as a junior and senior. Finished 42-0 and won WIAA Division I 215-pound title as a senior. Went 40-1 and was third in state at 215 pounds as junior after placing second at 189 as sophomore. Named USA Wrestling Cadet Greco All-America during summer of 2002. Honor Roll student.

Personal: Born April 23, 1986 in Sheboygan, Wisc. Health Education major. Parents are David and Sue McCarthy. Older brother, Patrick McCarthy, lettered as linebacker at Minnesota and was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree from 2003-05. Admires Walter Payton and brother, Patrick.
