  Matt Limegrover

Matt Limegrover

Player Profile

Position:
Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line

Experience:
1st Season at NIU

Alma Mater:
University of Chicago, 1991

The Huskie offense has exploded since the turn of the century, with six of Northern Illinois' seven most productive attacks coming since 2000. New Northern Illinois offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Matt Limegrover will look to continue that success as he takes over the reigns of the Huskie offense.

Limegrover spent seven season with head coach Jerry Kill at Southern Illinois before coming to DeKalb. During his time in Carbondale, Limegrover coordinated a consistently prolific offense that ranked in the top 10 (FCS) in scoring for six straight years (2002-07).

During his tenure at SIU, the Salukis averaged 207.8 yards per game on the ground, and totaled more than 3,000 rushing yards in four different seasons (2002, 03, 04, 06). Four of the top five rushing seasons in school history came under the guidance of Limegrover, and the two best career runners in SIU history, Tom Koutsos and Arkee Whitlock, earned their yards in his system.

Limegrover's rushing offense achieved over 18,000 yards on the ground at SIU, and his passing attack was as efficient as his ground game was profuse. Limegrover's Southern Illinois quarterbacks produced better than a 2-1 touchdown to interception ratio.

In addition to producing outstanding offensive units, Limegrover has helped groom top-level players. Of the five FCS All-Americans he has coached, two have been offensive lineman: Elmer McDaniel (First Team 2004, Second Team 2003) and Will Justice (First Team, 2006).

The Limegrover system produced the best offenses in SIU history. The Salukis' 2004 offenses set school records for both yards (502.7) and points (42.6) per game as well as touchdowns (67). In 2007, the Salukis produced 3,293 yards and scored 28 touchdowns through the air, also school records.

Limegrover's first experience with Kill dates back to their days at Emporia State (1999-2000) in the Flint Hills region of Kansas, where Limegrover was the Hornets' offensive line coach. In 1997-98, Limegrover served as the offensive line coach and running game coordinator at Ferris State, a position he earned after receiving his master's degree in liberal studies from Northwestern. While with the Wildcats as a graduate assistant coach (1994-96), Limegrover helped the team to a pair of bowl appearances (Citrus and Rose) and two Big Ten Championships.

Prior to his time at Northwestern, Limegrover served as the offensive assistant for his alma mater, the University of Chicago (1991-92), where he was promoted to offensive coordinator in 1993. That year, the Maroons led the nation in rushing. An all-conference offensive tackle for the University of Chicago, Limegrover received bachelor's degree in public policy studies in 1996.

Limegrover, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., and his wife, Ann, have two children: Emma (5), and T.J. (3).
