  Brian Anderson

Brian Anderson

Player Profile

Position:
Assistant Coach/Tight Ends

Experience:
1st Season at NIU

Alma Mater:
Western Illinois, 1993

After coaching wide receivers for each of the last 16 seasons, former receiver Brian Anderson will coach the Huskie tight ends in 2008.

Anderson, a Rockford, Ill. native, spent the last seven seasons with Jerry Kill at Southern Illinois, where he mentored some of the top wide receivers in school history. When Anderson left SIU, his protégés appeared in the Saluki record book 31 times.

The most prominent of Anderon's Saluki pupils is 2005 graduate Brent Little, who finished his career ranked second in SIU history in career receiving yardage (2,303) and touchdowns (20). Little is now pursuing a career with the Minnesota Vikings, one of five receivers that have gone on to the NFL after being coached by Anderson.

Before going to SIU, Anderson coached at Coffeyville Community College (1996-2000) in Coffeyville, Kan. There, he helped three athletes to their dream of plating in the NFL: Donnie O'Neal (San Francisco), Joe Perez (Kansas City), and Boo Williams (New Orleans/New York Giants), who has tallied over 1,000 receiving yards in the league as a tight end.

Anderson's success at Coffeyville was preceded by two seasons at Highland Community College (1996-97), also in Kansas. At Highland, Anderson coached wide receivers and was the team's passing game coordinator.

Prior to coaching at the two Kansas community colleges, Anderson began his coaching career at his alma mater, Western Illinois. He began as a student assistant in 1994 before being promoted to a restricted earnings wide receivers coach for the 1995 and 96 seasons. As a coach at WIU, Anderson tutored Leatherneck great Gunnard Twyner, who led the team in receiving yards in three of his four seasons and ranks second in program history for career receptions.

Anderson's collegiate playing career began at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Iowa. As a Panther, Anderson competed in the 1988 Royal Crown Cola Bowl and the 1989 Mid-American Bowl, that season's NJCAA national championship game.

After his career at Ellsworth, Anderson moved on to Macomb, Ill., where he earned his bachelor of arts degree in liberal arts. He redshirted the 1990 season at WIU, then lettered in both 1991 and 1992. Over his two seasons, the Leathernecks went 14-8-1, including an upset win over No. 15 Missouri State.
