Ball State 69, Northern Illinois 63 in PDF Format
Muncie, Ind. - The third time was not the charm for the Northern Illinois men's basketball team on Tuesday night, as the Huskies answered an 7-0 run and an 8-0 run by Ball State to open the second half, but could not overcome a final 12-2 run by the Cardinals as BSU earned the 69-63 Mid-American Conference victory over NIU at Worthen Arena.
Ball State junior forward Anthony Newell paced the Cardinals with 23 points, followed by a double-double from senior guard Peyton Stovall (13 points, 10 rebounds) and 10 points from Laron Frazier.
The Cardinals forced 16 Huskie turnovers which led to 23 points, while committing a mere three miscues on the evening.
"Nice job by Ball State," NIU head men's basketball coach Ricardo Patton said. "I thought their guards really controlled the game and played extremely well.
"We had opportunities," Patton continued. "Unfortunately we had too many turnovers and didn't force Ball State into enough mistakes."
With the victory, Ball State improves to 6-22 overall and 5-10 in MAC play, while the Huskies fall to 6-20 on the season and 3-11 in conference action.
NIU freshman guard Darion Anderson (Chicago, Ill./Carver Military Academy) paced the Huskies with a team-season best 24 points, including a team-season high 10 buckets, marking back-to-back 20-point outings for the Chicago native.
NIU wraps up the regular season on Sunday, March 9, as they travel to Ypsilanti, Michigan to square off with Eastern Michigan for a 1 p.m. (CST) tip-off.
