Senior Jeff Thomas will be blogging throughout the season about his experiences as a member of the Huskie baseball team. The outfielder from Loves Park, Ill., currently leads the team in hitting and is in his third season as the starting leftfielder. Thomas' latest posting talks about the first MAC home weekend against defending league tournament champion Kent State.
Long time no talk to!! Well everything is going pretty well for us at the moment. We just finished up winning a series against the projected top team in MAC East division (Kent State) in what was our first home series this year. My high school team (Harlem) came out and watched a game at "The Ralph" so that was good stuff. Go Huskies! It's always a good feeling being at home playing games in front of friends and loved ones. We had a great turn out for all of our weekend games and I want to thank the fans for coming out, supporting us and having some fun. We had a thrilling game on Saturday. If you weren't there, here is what happened ... It was down to the wire with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, score tied and our runner at third. It was the kind of scenario you make up in the back yard as a kid. I'm up at the plate with a lefty on the mound. In his warm up pitches he was wild so I really wasn't sure if I was going to see a strike. I settle into the box hoping he doesn't hit me and low and behold the first pitch is straight at my back, so that's ball one. His second pitch is outside and low so now I'm sitting pretty and ready to put a good swing on the next pitch. That pitch comes high and inside and I try to hold back, but the bat gets out there enough for me to make contact. So I check swing down the third base line to win the game. Who wins a game on a check swing!? It was a good thing we got the win. Sunday we almost pulled it out in the late innings again, but Kent State was just not having any of that and came out and played with a lot of urgency. After winning three of four games last week, our goal is to our record back to .500 or better with five games coming up this week.
All right, it's time for this Huskie to get back to catching up on his rest and his schoolwork. We hope to see a good turnout for next weekend's home series against Akron.
Until next time... |
